Among the cities along the Yangtze River, Taicang is the closest to Shanghai. The main urban area of Taicang is only about 50 kilometers away from downtown Shanghai. It takes only about 26 minutes to travel from Taicang to Shanghai Hongqiao Hub by Shanghai-Suzhou-Nantong Railway. Currently, the construction of South Yanjiang Railway and Phase Ⅱprojects of Shanghai-Suzhou-Nantong Railway has been accelerated, while the delicatated line of Taicang Port Railway has been operated, and the construction of North Yanjiang Railway is going to start soon. The Taicang section of Shanghai Jiamin Rail Transite Line's north extension is going to be constructed, and connect with the Suzhou-Wuxi-Changzhou Intercity Railway to be built during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025). In 2021, Taicang became the province's only county enlisted as a National Demonstration County for Urban-Rural Transportation Integration.
